Astimo
Maple Walk School
Astimo were appointed as Quantity Surveyors by New Model Schools for the construction of a privately funded Primary School in Harlesden NW10.
The works comprised of the demolition of a Social Club and the construction of a new school including 8 classrooms, assembly hall, library and other supporting accommodation. Externally the school has service road access, playground, junior play area and nature garden.
An incredibly tight programme of 8 months from commencement to completion was dictated by the start of the school year in September. To meet this programme an innovative and relatively new construction method in the UK was adopted. The walls and roof were formed from a concrete filled polystyrene sandwiched interlocking blocks. This form of construction does not only provide excellent insulation qualities but is also very quick in comparison with more traditional methods. The high insulation provided by the polystyrene construction together with the incorporation of a heat exchanger, solar panels, rainwater harvesting and sewage treatment plant make the school almost carbon neutral.
